Subject: Raising awareness
...Last week our class organised a campaign to raise awareness about plastic pollution. We made posters and shared them on social media. It was a lot of work, but it felt great.
What problems would you like to raise awareness about? How can young people draw attention to important issues? Have you ever taken part in a campaign?
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Peter

Life on Mars: what if we moved there?
For decades, scientists and science fiction writers have dreamed of humans living on Mars. Today, space agencies and private companies are working on plans to send people to the Red Planet. But what would life on Mars really be like?
Mars is very different from Earth. It is much colder, with an average temperature of about minus 60 degrees Celsius. Its atmosphere is thin and contains almost no oxygen. This means that humans would have to live in special buildings and wear spacesuits whenever they went outside.
If we lived on Mars, we would have to grow our own food. Scientists are already experimenting with plants that could grow in Martian soil. If these experiments succeeded, future settlers could grow vegetables in special greenhouses. But the soil on Mars contains chemicals that are harmful to humans, so the plants would have to be grown very carefully.
Water is another problem. There is ice on Mars, mostly at the poles, and scientists believe there may be water underground. If we could find a way to use this water, life on Mars would become much easier. But if we could not find water, living there would be almost impossible.
There is also the question of gravity. Mars has less gravity than Earth. If humans lived there for a long time, their muscles and bones would become weaker. Scientists are studying how astronauts on the International Space Station cope with similar problems.
Some people say that we should not go to Mars at all. They argue that we should spend the money on solving problems on Earth, such as climate change and poverty. Others believe that exploring space is part of human nature, and that we will go to Mars eventually.
I wish I had the chance to see it. I wish people would think more carefully about what space exploration can give us. And I wish we could find a way to explore space without forgetting the problems here at home.
A. What is the average temperature on Mars?
1. About 20 degrees Celsius. 2. About 0 degrees Celsius. 3. About minus 60 degrees Celsius. 4. About minus 200 degrees Celsius.
B. Why would humans have to live in special buildings on Mars?
1. Because of the cold and the lack of oxygen. 2. Because of the animals. 3. Because of the water. 4. Because of the gravity.
C. What problem would settlers face when growing food?
1. There is no sunlight. 2. The soil contains harmful chemicals. 3. There is too much rain. 4. Plants grow too quickly.
D. Why is gravity a problem on Mars?
1. Because it is too strong. 2. Because it makes people taller. 3. Because it would weaken muscles and bones. 4. Because it stops people from walking.
E. What does the author wish?
1. That we would stop exploring space. 2. That we would explore space without forgetting problems on Earth. 3. That we would move to Mars immediately. 4. That we would spend all our money on space.

Recycling in my city
Two years ago, my city started a new recycling programme. Before that, almost all rubbish had gone to landfill. Now there are separate bins for paper, plastic, glass, and general waste. Every block of flats has its own recycling point, which is emptied twice a week.
At first, many people were confused. They did not know which bin to use, and some simply did not care. But the city organised information campaigns, and volunteers went from door to door to explain how the system worked.
Schools also joined in: teachers explained recycling to children, who then went home and taught their parents. The results have been impressive. In the first year, the amount of rubbish sent to landfill fell by 30 per cent.
The city now recycles more than 40 per cent of its waste, which is one of the best results in the region. If we continue at this rate, we will have recycled more than half of our waste by 2030.
But there are still problems. Not everyone follows the rules. Some people put plastic in the paper bin, or food waste in the glass bin. This contaminates the whole container, and the contents have to be thrown away. If people sorted their rubbish more carefully, the recycling rate would be even higher.
The city is now planning to introduce a system of fines for people who repeatedly break the rules. Some residents think this is too strict. Others say it is necessary, because without fines, some people will never change their habits. I think recycling is something that everyone has to do. We cannot leave it to the government alone. If each of us made a small effort, the result would be enormous. I wish more people understood that.
