Do you know a tradition where children use turnips instead of pumpkins? Noson Galan Gaeaf takes place on October 31st in Wales. This night is much older than Halloween. Children carve a turnip. They put a candle inside it. These turnip lanterns look very strange. The children run through the streets. They shout 'Bwbach!' which means 'Boo!' in Welsh. The last child who returns home with a lit turnip can meet a real ghost. That is what people believe.
There are no pumpkins in this tradition – only turnips. Turnips are much harder to carve than pumpkins. You must be very careful with the knife. Some children make their lanterns in a group. This is safer than carving alone.
