The Personality of the Rat

According to legend, when the Buddha invited the animals of the kingdom to a party, the Rat was the first to show. And Rats certainly like to be at the forefront. Active, sociable and born under the sign of charm, they make popular company.

They are also quick to latch onto opportunity. Wherever they are, they like to make the most of their situation. In conversation they engage with others, find out information and invariably make an impression. If a member of a group, club or indeed workplace, they like to be involved and play their part. They also have a good way with words, including persuasive skills. Their observant nature allows them to appraise situations and they are worth seeking out for an honest and unbiased opinion. They also make superb critics.

However, while seemingly outgoing, Rats can be guarded. While they may not be averse to learning about the plans and secrets of others, they keep their own very much to themselves. And while they may offer advice, they rarely ask for it themselves. It would be to their advantage to share their true feelings (and concerns) more often.

It has been said that the more people you know, the more opportunities come your way. And this is certainly true for Rats. Their active lifestyle brings them into contact with many people and they are able to garner good support. In addition, they are often helped by their versatility. Their interests are many and skills wide-ranging. They are also alert, keen and ambitious, and if they sense an opportunity, they will be quick to pursue it. Little gets past them. However, because they involve themselves in so much – Rats never like to miss out – they can be restless and can abandon activities if they think there are better rewards elsewhere. This lack of persistence can sometimes work against them and they may not always reap the full rewards of their efforts. At times, greater discipline and persistence would help.

This also applies to money matters. Rats value money and like to protect and preserve their assets. However, having saved so hard, they may then succumb to lavish and indulgent spending sprees. They find bargains and sales irresistible! They are also very generous to their loved ones.

Although many Rat homes are tidy, the cupboards and storage spaces are likely to be crammed with items accumulated over the years. Rats can be notorious hoarders and rarely throw anything away lest it should have some future use.

With their versatile and personable nature, Rats can enjoy success in many lines of work. Being observant and interested in what is going on around them, they are often skilled communicators and make good writers, commentators and teachers. They also excel in professions calling for persuasive skills, including politics and the law. Banking, accountancy or one of the sciences may also appeal to their sharp, analytical mind. Ambitious, resourceful and capable, they have skills that can take them far.

Another of their abilities is problem-solving and if a way out of a tricky situation is needed, they will be sure to have an idea. Rats are masters of self-preservation.

They like to be busy and when not working will be usefully occupied pursuing their own interests and/or enjoying the company of others, usually both. Keen socializers, they like to party and go to shows and other forms of entertainment as well as take an interest in events happening locally.

Rats are also romantic and very much enjoy the thrill, passion and excitement of love. Tender, caring and attentive, they have much to offer and will very much treasure the love and affection of a partner. Family life is very important to them and they often have a large family. If they are parents, their diverse interests and fertile imagination will inspire and encourage many a young mind, and they often have a great love of their own parents and a desire to emulate them.

For female Rats, their family and home are their first priority. Caring, well organized and interested in others, they keep tabs on all that is going on and will often have a lot revolving around them. They are also incredibly versatile and use their talents in many different ways. They present themselves well and choose stylish and fashionable clothes. At work, they are ambitious, but will always try to ensure their commitments do not impact adversely on those who are important to them. Again, family and home are their priority.

With energy, enthusiasm, wit and charm, Rats are irrepressible. They just like to get on and do things, and will fill their days in many ways. Admittedly, they can be restless and impulsive and sometimes spread their energies too widely, but they are, above all, resourceful and energetic. And, being so companionable, they are also good to be with.

Top Tips for Rats

You may like to make the most of your situation and be very adept at spotting opportunities, but don’t always be looking over your shoulder and wondering if there are better prospects elsewhere. With persistence and staying power, you will often be able to achieve far more rewarding results.

You have a creative and inventive mind and a strong intuitive nature. But sometimes you may underestimate what you are capable of and not promote your ideas and special talents as fully as you should. In some instances this may be down to a fear of failure. Take note and believe in yourself!

Despite being so outgoing, you can be a private and guarded individual. Although you will gladly dispense advice, you will rarely ask for it, or even share what is on your mind. If you were to open up more, you would be able to benefit from the assistance and support others can give. In some cases, extra help could make an appreciable difference.

Time management! You tend to spread your energies widely and sometimes prioritizing and greater focus would make you more effective. Also, a longer-term strategy would help you to direct your energies in specific ways and often result in you achieving substantially more.

Relations with Others

With another Rat

Two Rats understand each other, have similar values and get on well together.

In work, their drive and enterprise can reward them well, although both need to focus and resist spreading their energies too widely.

In love, Rat couples are loving and devoted and enjoy many shared interests. Home life is especially important. A good match.

With an Ox

Although these two signs are very different in personality, they complement each other well and relations between them are mutually beneficial.

In work, the Rat has great respect for the conscientious and methodical Ox. The signs can quickly establish trust and, by drawing on each other’s strengths, enjoy an excellent working relationship.

In love, each gains from the other, with the Rat valuing the Ox’s strength of character and dependability. With both striving for a settled and stable home life, they can make an often excellent match.

With a Tiger

Lively, sociable and enterprising, Rats and Tigers like and respect each other and enjoy good relations.

In work, when these two join forces and have a common aim, their combined energy and inventiveness make them a formidable team.

In love, there can be passion and much attraction between these two, with the Rat valuing the Tiger’s confident and ebullient manner. Although both can be candid and different attitudes to money will need addressing (with the Tiger sometimes spending more than the Rat may like!), with goodwill and understanding, this can be a rewarding match.

With a Rabbit

Although both signs are sociable and enjoy conversation, their general chemistry does not always make for easy relations.

In work, the Rat may recognize the Rabbit’s acumen and attention to detail, but to be successful these two need to build trust and rapport, which they may not find easy.

In love, both may be passionate and sensual, but the Rat’s liking for a busy lifestyle and sometimes forthright manner will not sit comfortably with the Rabbit. Although both are home-loving, adjustments will be called for if the relationship is to endure.

With a Dragon

The Rat finds the Dragon stimulating company and these two signs like and respect each other.

In work, the Rat values the Dragon’s enterprising and enthusiastic manner, and as both are hard-working signs, they could enjoy considerable success.

In love, their shared interests, outlooks and devotion to each other make for an excellent match. The Rat will particularly value the Dragon’s confident and determined ways, and together they can find much happiness.

With a Snake

The Rat and Snake may not always understand each other, especially as both can, when the mood takes them, be guarded and secretive, but nevertheless there will be warmth and goodwill between them.

In work, both are ambitious and their different strengths will often be complementary. The Rat will have a high regard for the Snake’s planning skills.

In love, there can be a powerful sexual chemistry between the two, with the Rat often captivated by the Snake’s quiet, seductive charm. With both appreciating material comforts and loving their home, theirs can be a strong and mutually beneficial relationship.

With a Horse

Outgoing and sociable the Rat and Horse may be, but they are both forthright and opinionated too, and sooner or later differences of opinion will be aired!

In work, each will be keen to take the lead and, with the Rat having misgivings about the Horse’s self-willed and impulsive nature, relations could be difficult.

In love, they could be attracted by each other’s lively manner and, being keen socializers, have a lot of fun. But their strong wills and candid natures could lead to difficulty, as could their differing attitudes to money. A challenging match.

With a Goat

These two have a fondness for the good things in life, but their different natures and attitudes will present problems.

In work, the Rat could feel the Goat lacks drive and ambition and the portents are not good.

In love, both are sociable and fun-loving, but in time the Rat will despair over the Goat’s capriciousness and inclination to spend, while the sensitive Goat will be uncomfortable with the Rat’s candour. A difficult match.

With a Monkey

There is mutual liking and respect between these two vivacious signs and they get on well.

In work, both are determined and enterprising and each is capable of bringing out the best in the other. By pursuing specific goals, they can enjoy considerable success.

In love, these two are well matched. Sharing many interests and enjoying active lifestyles, they live life to the full, and the Rat will be reassured by having such a positive, enterprising and understanding partner. An excellent match.

With a Rooster

These two signs are certainly lively, active and outgoing but, as both are also candid, relations can be tricky.

In work the Rat likes to seize the moment, while the Rooster likes to plan and proceed cautiously. With their general approaches being so different and their characters being strong-minded and candid, these two do not work well together.

In love, both value their home life as well as enjoy many interests, but each likes to have their own way and they will be liable to clash. A challenging match.

With a Dog

Although their personalities and outlooks are very different, there is mutual appreciation and respect between these two, especially on a personal level.

In work, though, relations could be muted. The go-getting Rat likes to make the most of opportunities and could find the Dog’s more disciplined approach inhibiting.

In love, each will admire the qualities and strengths of the other and the Rat will especially value the Dog’s loyal and dependable nature. With both signs being romantic and passionate and having a love of their home, they can make a good and lasting match.

With a Pig

With the Rat’s charm and Pig’s geniality, these two signs enjoy each other’s company and have much in common. Relations between them are good.

In work, their shared enterprise and zeal can work well, with the Rat valuing the Pig’s commercial acumen. Together they can make an effective and successful team.

In love, there can be a great bond between them. Both are family-oriented and will work hard to enjoy a good lifestyle. The Rat will particularly value having such a supportive, loving and good-natured partner. A successful match.

Horoscopes for Each of the Chinese Years

Rat Fortunes in the Year of the Rat

This not only marks the start of a new cycle of animal years, but is a special one for Rats. Who better to understand the ways and workings of the year than Rats themselves?

This is very much a year for making and carrying out plans. ‘There is no time like the present’, as the saying reminds us, and for Rats who have been nurturing certain hopes or plans, now is the time. Their energy and resourcefulness will help them to do well.

At work, the Rat year can bring some excellent possibilities, but Rats need to actively follow up openings. Many will find that positions of greater responsibility will become available in their present place of work and the depth of their knowledge will make them strong candidates. As a result, many can make important progress this year and take their career to new levels.

If currently dissatisfied or seeking a position, they will find this is a good year to explore possibilities and consider other ways in which they use their strengths. Rats are resourceful and in their own year their wide-ranging abilities can lead to some worthy results.

Rat years also encourage personal development, and whether in their work or their own interests, Rats themselves should look to further their knowledge. This is an excellent year for starting projects, setting challenges and developing skills. However, while the aspects are encouraging, Rats do need to be disciplined. Although they may start activities with enthusiasm, sometimes this can wane as fresh temptations come along. Rats, take note and keep in mind the benefits that concerted effort can bring. And what you undertake in your own year can often leave a far-reaching legacy.

The successes of the year can also help financially and the income of many Rats is set to increase. There can be an element of good fortune, too, with some Rats benefiting from the receipt of additional funds or from making some shrewd and timely purchases. Rats have an eye for a good deal. However, while a favourable year financially, it could be useful for Rats to give some thought to the longer term, including perhaps setting funds aside for future requirements or adding to a savings or pension policy. With good management, the situation of many can improve this year.

Rats are by nature sociable and will again enjoy positive relations with many of those around them this year. In their home life they will be keen to carry out domestic improvements as well as be active in supporting and advising loved ones. Their ability to keep tabs on a great many things at once will often amaze others, but such are the talents of Rats! Also, for any Rats who have thoughts of moving, this is a year to explore possibilities. Once ideas are acted upon, developments can quickly assist the process and serendipity can prove a useful friend over the year. With good support and family members all playing their part, many plans and projects can be successfully advanced over the course of the Rat year.

On a social level, Rats will also value their close friendships as well as their various chances to go out. They will often be on sparkling form and can look forward to extending their social network.

For the unattached and those who have experienced recent personal disappointment, their own year can mark the start of a new and sometimes life-changing romance. For some, the sound of wedding bells may be heard. These can be personally special times for Rats and the year is rich in possibility.

With resolve, energy and enterprise, Rats can accomplish a great deal in their own year and their achievements can be of long-term consequence.

Tips for the Year

Seize the initiative and set plans in motion. This is a year for action. However, do remain disciplined and use your time well. Giving up, giving less than your best or getting distracted could all undermine your efforts. Also, preserve time for your interests and to enjoy with others. Your personal relations can make this year even more special.

Rat Fortunes in the Year of the Ox

Rats are by nature hard-working and are set to do well in the Ox year. The gains made in the previous year can now be built on and continued headway made.
