Она nodded и отошла от него. Из дверей конторки emerged Джордж Уилсон с двумя стульями.
Мы waited её на дороге, чтобы нас не было видно.
«Terrible место, не так ли?» – сказал Том.
«Awful».
«It does her good to get away».
«Разве её муж не object?»
«Уилсон? Он думает, что она ездит повидать свою sister в Нью-Йорке».

Then she spoke to her husband in a quiet but surprisingly coarse voice:
“Get some chairs, so somebody can sit down.”
“Oh, sure,” agreed Wilson hurriedly and went toward the little office.
“I want to see you,” said Tom intently. “Get on the next train.”
“All right.”
“I'll meet you by the news-stand.”
She nodded and moved away from him. George Wilson emerged with two chairs from his office door.
We waited for her down the road and out of sight.
“Terrible place, isn't it?” said Tom.
“Awful.”
“It does her good to get away.”
“Doesn't her husband object?”
“Wilson? He thinks she goes to see her sister in New York. “

И вот, Том Бьюкенен, его девушка и я together отправились в Нью-Йорк, вернее не совсем together, поскольку миссис Уилсон благоразумно села в другой car. В news-stand она купила «Town Tattle» и журнал, а в пристанционной аптеке cream и маленький флакончик perfume. Затем она сказала, указывая на седого старика с basket:
«Я хочу одну из тех собачек. Я хочу такую у себя в apartment. Они так милы!»
В корзине у седого старика были симпатичные puppies.
«What kind are they?» – спросила миссис Уилсон.
«Всех пород. Какую породу вы want, леди?»
«Я хотела бы одну из тех police dogs, у вас есть такие?»
Человек заглянул в basket, сунул в неё руку и вытащил за шкирку щенка.

So Tom Buchanan and his girl and I went up together to New York-or not quite together, for Mrs. Wilson sat discreetly in another car. At the news-stand she bought a copy of “Town Tattle” and a magazine and, in the station drug store, some cream and a small flask of perfume. Then said, pointing at the grey old man with a basket.
“I want one of those dogs. I want to get one for the apartment. They're so nice.”
In a basket, the grey old man had pretty puppies.
“What kind are they?” asked Mrs. Wilson.
“All kinds. What kind do you want, lady?”
“I'd like to get one of those police dogs; do you have that kind?”
The man peered into the basket, plunged in his hand and drew one up, by the back of the neck.

The puppy устроился на коленях миссис Уилсон.

«Это сука, – decisively сказал Том. – Вот твои money. Иди и buy на них ещё десять собак».
Мы подъехали к Пятой Авеню, очень warm и мягкой в летний Sunday день.
«Hold on, – сказал я, – я должен вас здесь leave».
«Нет, не должен», – поспешно interposed Том.
«Миртл обидится, если ты не зайдёшь в apartment. Не так ли, Миртл?”

“I think it's cute,” said Mrs. Wilson enthusiastically. “How much is it?”
“That dog?” He looked at it admiringly. “That dog will cost you ten dollars.”
The puppy settled down into Mrs. Wilson's lap.
