Gino
His screams woke Alba. She came into the living room.
«Signor, did you call me?» she asked in a tone of utter indifference. «Do you need my help?»
Already drunk, he could not contain his anger.
«No! You need help yourself!» he screamed in rage. «You said some really mean things to me. And asked me not to fire you. That’s a lot of nerve, I must say! You know why you are lonely? Because you are like a cold steak for a bachelor’s breakfast. You, with your appearance of sacrifice, make me feel only one thing: a predator’s desire to squeeze a cry of pain out of you so that you show at least some emotion! But you’re not really that simple… Nooo, you’re cunning! But you’re not far-sighted.
How you piss me off with your indifference to everything around you! Get out of here, get out, I said! I don’t want you in my house tomorrow, you are fired!»
She silently turned around and left the living room.
The feeling of guilt for Alba was not long in coming. Gino sat down in a chair and, staring at the floor, got lost in his thoughts, disgusted with himself: «Why did I do that to her? Where am I going to? I am either a victim, or an executioner, or an indifferent bastard. I have to apologize. But no. Not now, not now… Tomorrow morning. I’ll apologize, write her a check and let her go for a week, let her unwind and rest.»
Chapter 8.
Dialogue with Mario
After calming down a little, Gino called Mario.
«Hello.»
«Hello. Why so late? I was already asleep, did something happen?!»
«Mario, can you come over, I’ll explain everything when I see you.»
«Yes, sure! I’ll come over right now.»
Mario hung up. He kissed his sleeping wife and children, quietly got dressed and drove to Gino.
When they met, they exchanged friendly hugs and went from the hall to the living room.
Gino poured him some whiskey and, remembering that he was a big fan of cigars, offered him one. Mario lit it with pleasure, and they sat down in armchairs opposite the fireplace.
«Mario, I’m sorry for calling you so late,» said Gino in low spirits. «I don’t know what to do with myself, so much has been happening lately! I just need to get it off my chest.»
«By the way, how’s your wife, Annetta? How are the kids?»
«They are fine, sleeping now. Everything is stable as always.»
«I envy you!» said Gino. «Annetta and your daughters love you so much. Mario, you’re a lucky man. It must be so wonderful to be a father.»
