The sun climbed to the top of the sky (солнце поднялось на вершину неба). The man worked on (человек продолжал работать). Pan by pan (лоток за лотком), he went up the stream (он шел вверх по ручью), the tally of results steadily decreasing (его сбор: «итог его результатов» /при этом/ неуклонно уменьшался; tally – счет, подсчет, число, итог).
Returning to where he had started operations, he began to pan up the stream. At first his golden herds increased – increased prodigiously. “Fourteen, eighteen, twenty-one, twenty-six,” ran his memory tabulations. Just above the pool he struck his richest pan – thirty-five colors.
“Almost enough to save,” he remarked regretfully as he allowed the water to sweep them away.

“Ah, ha! He crossed the stream below the pool and disappeared through the green screen. A large body plunged and panted (какое-то огромное тело пробиралось и храпело; to pant – тяжело дышать, пыхтеть). There was a snapping and ripping and rending (был /слышен/ треск и хруст; to snap – трещать; to rip – разрывать; to rend – раздирать; дробить, раскалывать), and amid a shower of falling leaves (и среди потока падающих листьев) a horse burst through the screen (лошадь пробилась/прорвалась через завесу). On its back was a pack (на ее спине был тюк), and from this trailed broken vines and torn creepers (и из него свешивались обрывки лозы и оторванные ползучие растения; to tear – рвать). The animal gazed with astonished eyes at the scene (животное осмотрело удивленными глазами вид/пейзаж) into which it had been precipitated (в котором оно оказалось: «в который она была ввергнута»; to precipitate – ввергать
