The Fisher Boy and the Glass Fish

Chapter One: The Shimmer in the Water

In a quiet little village surrounded by rolling green hills and bright wildflowers, there lived a boy named Oliver. The village rested beside a wide, slow-moving river that shimmered like liquid sapphire under the morning sun. The river was the heart of the village — it watered the fields, reflected the sky, and whispered gentle songs against the smooth round stones along its banks.

Oliver loved that river more than anything.

Every morning, just as the golden sunlight began to stretch across the rooftops, he would grab his small wooden fishing rod and run down the narrow dirt path that led to the water. The grass would still be cool with dew, and birds would sing cheerfully from the branches overhead. Oliver imagined himself a brave fisherman, patient and skillful, destined one day to catch the largest and most magnificent fish anyone had ever seen.

He would sit at the edge of the wooden dock, legs dangling above the rippling water, and cast his line with great seriousness. Sometimes he caught small silver fish. Sometimes he caught nothing at all. But he never stopped dreaming.

One bright and cloudless afternoon, as dragonflies danced above the surface and the river reflected the deep blue sky, Oliver noticed something unusual beneath the water. At first, he thought it was a trick of the sunlight. But then it shimmered again — brighter than silver, brighter than polished stone. It glowed with soft colors, like a hidden rainbow moving beneath the surface.

Oliver’s heart began to beat faster.

Carefully, holding his breath, he lowered his line closer to the sparkling shape. The river seemed suddenly very quiet, as if it too were watching. With a gentle tug, he felt something light yet firm catch onto his hook.

Slowly, very slowly, he pulled.

Out of the water rose the most extraordinary creature Oliver had ever seen.

It was a fish — but not like any fish from the river. Its body was прозрачный and delicate, as if shaped from the clearest glass. Sunlight passed through it and scattered into tiny prisms of color. Its fins shimmered like thin crystal petals, and its tail sparkled with every movement. Droplets of water slid from its smooth surface like falling stars.

Oliver gasped in amazement. The fish did not thrash wildly like other fish. Instead, it looked at him with calm, shining eyes.

“Please,” the Glass Fish whispered in a soft, chiming voice that sounded like wind through tiny bells, “do not keep me. I am fragile, and I belong to the river. The river keeps me safe.”

Oliver had never heard a fish speak before. He blinked in surprise, but his wonder quickly turned into excitement. He imagined carrying this magical creature back to the village. He imagined the astonished faces of his neighbors, the praise, the admiration.

Everyone will say I am the greatest fisherman of all, he thought proudly. They have never seen anything like this.

The Glass Fish shimmered gently in his hands, fragile and luminous.

“Please,” it whispered again, softer this time.

But Oliver’s desire to show the world his discovery was stronger than the small voice of caution in his heart. Carefully, trying not to drop it, he placed the Glass Fish into his metal bucket filled with river water. The creature’s body glowed faintly as it settled at the bottom.

For a brief moment, the river’s surface rippled strangely, as though sighing.

Oliver picked up his bucket and hurried back up the path, unaware that some beautiful things shine brightest only when they are free
